Script 2: MORTAL KOMBAT MYTHOLOGIES: SHAO KAHN

MK Mythologies: Shao Kahn.

Really just the old stories from MK, now from Shao Kahn's point of view.  Stories adapted from the games: Shao Kahn's conquest of Edenia, death of King Jerrod, marriage of Sindel to Shao Kahn, Sindel's suicide, and, before that, his battles with the Dragon King (MK Deception).  Throughout all this, Shinnok is still imprisoned in the NetherЯealm.

I might have not thought this story would do well until Star Wars, Episode 3 came out, showing the Darth Vader prequel story.  Now I think they really could pull off a Shao Kahn movie to great success.

For over 10 years, when I was outlining and then writing Mortal Kombat X as a book, Part 1 was to be called "The Beginning of All Things", and Part 2 was to be called "Shao Kahn".  This would take an Ultimate Marvel kind of approach to remaking Mortal Kombat, the same core stories, but now presented very long and in-depth, with less rush to reach the fight scenes.

Not until 2013 did I decide to rename them into MK Mythologies: Raiden and MK Mythologies: Shao Kahn, both names definitely inspired by the video-game MK Mythologies: Sub-Zero.

Later, when they announced a new game called Mortal Kombat X, I was very glad I had changed the name of the two stories into Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Raiden and Shao Kahn!

Lin Kuei Logo

That's the Lin Kuei logo, of course.  Found via Google.  This is the symbol that the Cryomancers draw into the snow.

Where the stories come from

Mortal Kombat 2 showed us Outworld, and introduced its Emperor, Shao Kahn.  Kitana was a princess whose parents had been the original king and queen of Outworld before Shao Kahn killed them and took over.

Mortal Kombat 3 had Shao Kahn successfully merging Earth with Outworld, and I suspect that this was his vision and goal all along, throughout all the prequel years.  It also gave us Sindel, the original queen of Outworld, now resurrected and driven to evil.

Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 went further to reveal that Kitana was from Edenia, as were Jade and Rain, and Shao Kahn killed Kitana's father, King Jerrod, a backstory-character that we never see, married Sindel by force, drove her to kill herself, and merged the perfect realm of Edenia with Outworld.  We learn that Kitana is a good guy, not a bad guy.  She was either under brain-washing hypnosis by Kahn, or was led to serve him through lies, but really she is the victim of his evil.

Mortal Kombat: Annihilation elaborated a lot on the history of Outworld, with dialogue exchanged between the characters.  We got to see Kitana as a good-guy-only, and we even got to see, near the end, Sindel's hypnosis wear off, and the Good Sindel back - from way long ago, before Edenia was ruined.  Thus we get to see, for the first time, the Good Sindel, whom we have really never seen in the games.  Some other major twists and changes: now Shinnok is the father of Shao Kahn, and also Raiden.  This makes them brothers.

I always liked that idea, and kept that in the canon of my story.  First you have Raiden battling Shinnok, long ago, in the dinosaur days, according to MK4.  But now I've connected things together so that Raiden is battling his own father, who wants to wipe out life on Earth.  After that, Shinnok creates a second son, who will become Shao Kahn, a son not so weak, a son who will serve darkness.  Think about it.  Technically this is what the story would logically be, in a way.  Right?

The cartoon show, MK: Defenders of the Realm, elaborated in the 13th and final episode about how the realm of Edenia was overtaken by Shao Kahn, SHOWING it all in flashback rather than the standard conversational walk-and-talk between characters.  So we really got to SEE Kitana and King Jerrod taking a walk, minus Sindel.  The cartoon version always seemed like the most canon version to me, for the story of Edenia becoming overtaken and turned dark.

At the end of Mortal Kombat 4, we learn that Edenia has been restored.  Mortal Kombat 4 focuses on Shinnok, and the amulet that he needs.  In my version, I describe the amulet as containing his Essence, which he needs to become all-powerful again.

Shinnok is the father of both Raiden and Shao Kahn, but if Raiden is the God of Thunder, then what is Shao Kahn the God of?  They're both brothers in MK: Annihilation.

What about half-brothers?  Like Thor and Loki, from Norse mythology, and Marvel Comics.  What if Raiden and Shao Kahn were half-brothers?  They would have the same father, Shinnok, but two different mothers.

In my version, I've made up two new names for the women who birthed Raiden and Shao Kahn: Izanami (Elder God), and Shao Ming (mortal woman).  Izanami is kind of a half-new character, because she's based on the appearance of the Female Elder God we saw in MK9.

So, basically, here is the total story.  First, you have 7 Elder Gods, including Shinnok and Izanami.  Two Elder Gods give birth to regular Gods and Goddesses, like Raiden.  After the battles in the days of the dinosaurs, Shinnok is banished to the NetherRealm.  But somehow he comes back for a short visit to Earth and creates a son with a mortal woman, a son that will be more dedicated to darkness.

So Raiden and Shao Kahn are HALF-brothers now, like Thor and Loki.

Shao Kahn is half-human, half-God, like Hercules.

Yet he grew up on an island, 200 miles from China.  This is similar to how Zeus grew up on the island of Crete, which was slightly far from Greece, so that he would not be found by his father, Cronus.

Then again, Mortal Kombat has an island already, Shimurai Island, where the 10th tournament took place.  Why not just use that island?  Long, long ago, Shao Kahn was brought there to be raised.  That would tell an entirely new story, that of Shao Kahn's upbringing, working in details from Greek heroes and Gods.  Over a decade later I would learn that MK2's villainous Kintaro was named after a Japanese fairy tale hero, like Momotaro the Peach Boy with MK3's Motaro.

So Zeus grew up on an island called Crete, because his father Cronus would kill him if he knew he had survived so far.  Zeus is the hero/leader of the Greek Gods, and his father, Cronus, also known as the sky, is the villain.  This is similar to how I show Raiden and Shinnok, except in my version Shinnok was a good guy for a long time, creating the world, giving Raiden his orders of where to fly and what to do.

In Greek, Cronus is driven by a paranoid belief that his own grandchildren will one day overthrow him (similar to the paranoia felt by Egyptian Sun God Ra).  The hero/villain relationship between Zeus and Cronus has a similar feeling to when you alter MK4 so that Shinnok is Raiden's father.

So it all connects together pretty logically, to me.  The only major problem is that after Raiden and Shinnok battled in MK4, Shinnok was banished to the NetherRealm, making it impossible to birth Shao Kahn much later on.

So, how could Shinnok come back to Earth for a short visit?  If you have seen "Hellraiser", you will see how a little bit of blood helps to begin regenerating a human body for a visit back to Earth.  All it takes is one person pricking his finger on accident, and for blood to drip onto the right parts of the floor, for an Earth body (basically an avatar) to start to regenerate and thus bring the tortured soul out of Hell and back into Earth.

But that's Hellraiser.

Skarlett, in MK9, seems to have a body made from blood.  Mileena was a clone of Kitana, made from the Flesh Pits, according to MK9.  MK: Legacy has her instead as a baby clone of baby Kitana, so that both were raised to be twin sisters.  So with all that in mind, would it really be that difficult to assume that Hellraiser's rule about blood forming a human body could be used to give Shinnok a temporary flesh and blood body?

Is there a word for a God or Goddess coming to Earth in some kind of temporary flesh-and-blood mortal body?

Yes.  The word is "avatar", from Hinduism.  It's clear enough that Hinduism is the basis for the six-armed character Grum, from the MK comics.  Anyway, an "avatar" is the flesh-and-blood mortal Earth body used by Hindu Gods, Goddesses, and demons in their visits to Earth.

I would just have to assume that the rest of my assumptions were right, that these avatar bodies could be killed by gunshots or a long fall or by a truck, and the body could become dead, yet the immortal soul, or essence, of that God, Goddess, or demon would leave the avatar body and itself remain immortal.  You see, all humans have souls.  It's kind of weird to call Raiden or Fujin's essences "souls", like us lower humans, so I say the word "soul" should be used for humans and "essence" for the Gods.  But when you capitalize the first letter of the word Essence, it seems real big and important.

So if you use enough blood, you can help Shinnok, whose Essence is still damned to Hell, to generate a new body of blood and flesh, giving him an avatar to walk around in for hours at a time.

Shinnok already has his worshipers in the Brothers of the Shadow.  What are they?  They're a group of Shinnok-worshipers.  I say, time to use the word "cult", for the first time in Mortal Kombat's history to my knowledge, to describe the Brothers of the Shadow.  I mean, how cult-ish can you get, but to worship the NetherRealm?

Noob Saibot, the wraith, was revealed in MK: Deception to actually be Sub-Zero, who died in MK1, went to Hell, and returned as a wraith.  It also seems that Noob Saibot's alternate costume looks like a human wearing all black, so I could assume Brothers of the Shadow cultists wear all black, serve the NetherRealm, and want to help Shinnok rise back to power.

If the Brothers of the Shadow are already Shinnok's followers, damned souls in Hell who have come back as a wraith, then I can safely assume a few things.  First, I bet the wraiths are powered by sampling a drop of Shinnok's Essence.  Second . . . why not make them a REAL cult by having people sacrifice themselves to Shinnok?  Just to offer their blood and flesh to him, so that he can (with Hellraiser laws of physics, for one moment) use the blood to form an avatar body for himself.  Using this avatar, he will roam Earth for 7 hours, and in this time, he will mate with a mortal woman.  Thus he will create a son who will live for darkness.  Now that's a more poignant cult story, where the cult is working toward a supernatural and evil goal that is actually achieved.

One little problem.  Shinnok is supposed to be stuck in the NetherRealm.  If he can arrange a visit to Earth any time he feels like, why not just do that, like, all the time?  So, you see, I have to explain real quickly that, first, it takes a lot of effort and a lot of work just to arrange that visit, he requires the outside help of his cult of followers, and, finally, he comes to Earth in an avatar body that is as weak and powerless as everyone else.  To be in the body of a mortal, walking the Earth so weakly, feeling the starvation and headaches and the agony of a long walk, would feel like being stuck in chains, to Shinnok.  Thus, he still would be in need of more - the amulet - before he can really skyrocket again (MK4).  So in the meantime he creates a second son, one who would be dark instead of soft like Raiden, and the second son will bring his amulet to him.  However, his son ends up being so dark that he lets his father remain in the NetherRealm instead, without even trying to bring the amulet to him, as he goes on to conquer and rule manmade civilzations.

A lot of this, I came up with in 2002, at age 14.  In 2002, this was my story I had come up with for Shao Kahn's life story: his father was Shinnok, who mated with mortal woman Shao Ming, to give birth to a child who would help him in his dark work, the same way a farmer creates kids to help out with the farm work.  His mother, Shao Ming, died in childbirth.  Shao Kahn was taken by the Shadow Priests to be raised on Shimurai Island, without the influence of regular mortals.  As an adult, he becomes Shao Kahn, the Emperor.

There was only one problem with my first version, because Shinnok was never banished.  Instead, Baphomet was the one who was banished, the God of Darkness who rebelled against the Elder Gods and ended up banished to Hell, the NetherRealm.  This was what I wrote at age 14.  Shinnok never was banished, but Baphomet was.  The former God of Darkness ended up the master of the NetherRealm.  Shinnok, having seen this example placed, is wise enough not to harm anyone, because then he would be banished, so he creates a son who will help him.  Then, Shinnok cannot be charged with treason, necessarily.

My story was pretty good, but the only thing that bothered me was Shinnok never being banished to the NetherRealm.  I had expanded Baphomet's role from being a deleted character, who would have been an Elder Demon, to being the master of the NetherRealm, and the one that was banished by the Elder Gods.  Shao Kahn never sees Shinnok, growing up.  Shinnok is with the other Elder Gods.  But they communicate in dreams.

Shao Kahn's upbringing is never touched upon in the games, but I felt like I had found the right story.  But what about Shinnok being banished, and needing his amulet to come back?  I instead had Shao Kahn having all his Essence, his God half of him, removed from him shortly after birth and contained in a manmade artifact: a helmet.  Shinnok will tell Shao Kahn where he put it, in a temple hidden from the normal world, placed high up at the top of a mountain.  But he will tell Shao Kahn where to find it only after young Kahn has proven that he deserves it.  He must conquer one realm, on his own, with no power at all, to prove that he deserves it.  Then, he will be told where to find the helmet, so that he can have his Essence back and be all-powerful, as powerful as a half-man, half-God.

So Shao Kahn takes over Edenia, and he turns its beautiful landscape into a dark place, now called Outworld.  After he finds the helmet, and absorbs his Essence back into him, now he must answer to the Elder Gods.  He finds a way to get away with everything he's done thus far, however, moving forward, he cannot overtake any more realms by force, or else he will be banished, like Baphomet.  Thus leads to the need to establish a tournament to determine whether or not Shao Kahn may have the realm he wants.

In 2002, my Shao Kahn story seemed pretty logical to me.  I had found a way to have Baphomet in the story of Mortal Kombat after all!  But in later years I decided to take the approach less like Ultimate Spider-Man, changing things and presenting things differently, and instead stick more to the games' canon.  So, I went back to the games' stories after all, with Raiden and Shinnok battling during the dinosaur days.  Shinnok gets banished.  An amulet contains his Essence.  And as I learned about things like Hindu avatar bodies, the Hellraiser rule about blood being used to form a new body, and other such things, I found ways to phrase my story better.

Also, it turns out a "demi-God" is the word for a half-mortal, half-God, like Hercules.  So, although Raiden and Shao Kahn are brothers they are only half-brothers, making Raiden a God of Thunder and Shao Kahn a demi-God.

Tall poles stand on the ground, covered

in human skulls.

NARRATION

At first, Shinnok had been alone in the

inferno.  Nothing else existed here except

Baphomet, the NetherЯealm’s owner and

master.  But Shinnok watched as one human

soul after another ended up in the inferno with him.

One more human skeleton of bone

develops over a pole.

A human body - a Hell avatar - materializes

on the ground from a strike of yellow lightning.

NARRATION

Using the help of humans, Shinnok decided that he would

need a short visit to the Earth realm, and in this time, he

would create a son with a mortal woman.  This son would

be raised to do his father’s work.

INT. CHINA - HILLSIDE

Two Chinese men wear all black robes and hoods.

They look at each other, and nod their heads.

They remove their hoods, revealing their heads

and faces.

Elder God Shinnok had his followers in the Earth realm,

the same as Raiden did.  Shinnok’s followers were a cult

called the Brothers of the Shadow.

The two robed men look up a staircase that

belongs to an altar.

The two men walk up the staircase.

ROBED MAN 1

Elder God Shinnok, Dark Lord . . .

we offer ourselves to you.

Do with it what you must.

The two men throw themselves

into the fire.

NARRATION

Men in the Brothers of the Shadow cult

sacrificed their flesh and blood to Shinnok.

INT. NETHERЯEALM - LOWEST LEVEL

Shinnok stands surrounded by the flames, ready.

From behind Shinnok, we see that he is looking

upward, into a blue circle that shows him the

Earth realm.

NARRATION

Enough of their blood would allow him to form

a short visit to Earth, in an avatar body of flesh

and blood.

FADE TO:

INT. EARTH - OUTDOOR FIELDS - MOONLIT NIGHT

We FLY THROUGH THE FIELDS of

green grass, until we SETTLE ON Shinnok,

fully clothed, rising from his knees to a

standing position.

SHINNOK

It is done!  I . . . I am back on Earth.

I have . . . an avatar body . . . but I

. . . I have no power.  I’m nothing

more than a . . . a mortal now.

Shinnok walks on into the moonlit night.

NARRATION

Shinnok knew he did not have long to visit Earth.

But during this time, he impregnated a female mortal.

After doing this, he went back to the NetherЯealm,

undetected.

Two black wraiths, spirit-like monsters of

the NetherЯealm, fly at Shinnok, and

help his body vanish into nothing.

Both Shinnok and the wraiths are gone.

CUT TO the mortal woman,

holding her stomach.

NARRATION

Shao Ming had become pregnant

with a baby that was born to kill,

conquer, and enslave.

FADE TO: BLACK.

EXT. SHAO MING’S HOME - RAINY MORNING

Rain pours down outside Shao Ming’s

small, simple home, right by the fields

in China.

INT. SHAO MING’S HOME

A doctor sits inside her living room

with her, helping her to deliver the baby.

Many lanterns are being used, even during

the daytime, because of the rain.

NARRATION

Shao Ming died in childbirth.  But not until

after she told the doctor the name she had

thought of for her baby.  Shao Kahn.

FADE TO: BLACK.

NARRATION

The baby Shao Kahn was now without mother,

and without father.  Shao Kahn would never

have parents.  And so the Shadow Priests showed up.

FADE TO:

INT. SHAO MING’S HOME - SECONDS LATER

Shadows of robed men dance across the walls.

Men float over the floor, without taking steps.

They are the Shadow Priests.  Wearing purple

robes over their heads and bodies, leaving

revealed only their hands and mouths, they

are the servants of Shao Kahn.

NARRATION

The Brothers of the Shadow worshiped Shinnok.

But the Shadow Priests favored his son, Shao Kahn,

instead.  From the beginning of his time, the Shadow

Priests would make sure the boy’s needs were taken

care of . . . and they would see to it that he grew up

to fulfill his dark, unholy destiny.

One of the Shadow Priests uses his right hand,

without touching the doctor, to instigate spasms

in the man’s body, and soon enough, his head

pops right off of his neck.

The man’s head hits the floor.

Baby Shao Kahn looks at the head,

a little distressed.

Then it looks back at the Shadow Priest,

and smiles.  Now joyful, baby Shao Kahn

waves his hands up and down repeatedly.

NARRATION

Shao Kahn found his parents with the

Shadow Priests.

One purple robed man picks up the baby

Shao Kahn to hold in his hands.

SHADOW PRIEST 2

No, you fool!  Be gentle!  Be very gentle!

SHADOW PRIEST 1

I know this, idiot!

Shadow Priest 1 holds the baby

Shao Kahn closely and safely.

SHADOW PRIEST 1

Goo-goo.  Goo-goo.

SHAO KAHN

Ahhh.  Ahhh.

SHADOW PRIEST 1

Come.  Let’s go.

They all float toward the same position

in the floor, into which they vanish into

thin air, leaving behind a small cloud of

purple smoke.  Then, the room is left empty.

FADE TO: BLACK.

INT. EAST CHINA SEA - DAY

We FLY THROUGH the oceans.

NARRATION

Over 200 miles off the coast of the East China Sea

exists Shimurai Island.

We ARRIVE AT an island, unpopulated

and undiscovered by humans.

NARRATION

No man on Earth had yet discovered this island,

and so the Shadow Priests raised Shao Kahn here.

INT. SHIMURAI ISLAND - DAYTIME

One Shadow Priest holds a laughing baby Shao Kahn.

NARRATION

It would take many years for the baby to

grow older.  But already he was the Child

of Darkness.

INT. DREAM - NIGHT

The gigantic head of Elder God Shinnok

talks to Shao Kahn, against blackness.

SHINNOK

My son.  Shao Kahn.  Your mother died in

childbirth, and you never met her.  Her name

was Shao Ming.  She’s in Paradise now.

I am your father - and I brought you into

the world for a plan of conquest.

INT. SHIMURAI ISLAND - INT. TENT

Shao Kahn, an early adolescent boy, wakes up.

INT. SHIMURAI ISLAND - OUTDOORS - THE NEXT DAY

SHAO KAHN
I had a dream.

SHADOW PRIEST 1

We all have dreams.

SHAO KAHN

My father, Shinnok, told me that my

mother was Shao Ming.  Is this true?

SHADOW PRIEST 2

. . . Yes.  This is true.  Shinnok thought

some things should wait until you got a

little older.

SHAO KAHN

I was created . . . not to be a nobody,

on this island.  I was created so that I

could actually be something significant!

A conqueror of everything that exists!

SHADOW PRIEST 1

I’m glad you’re finally getting to

this point in your development.  It’s

about time we showed you . . . China.

INT. CHINA - SHORES OF LAND AND OCEAN

In a puff of purple smoke, two Shadow

Priests teleport to the edge of the land,

holding Shao Kahn by the arm.

SHADOW PRIEST 1

We are here.  Now, boy, you will get

to see what China is like.  You will get

to see how the rest of the humans live.

They all walk on, into a crowded outdoor

Chinese marketplace.

Shao Kahn is quickly lost in the crowd of

people.  It feels as though he can hear all

the people talking at once.

INT. CHINESE HILLSIDE - OVERLOOKING THE VILLAGE - LATER

Shao Kahn sits on the hills, with both

Shadow Priests behind him.

SHAO KAHN

So this is the normal world.

SHADOW PRIEST 1

Yes.  And although you will never live

as one of them, you WILL become

their ruler.

SHAO KAHN

But look at them!  They all . . . they . . .

SHADOW PRIEST 1

What?

SHAO KAHN

They look so happy.  Those boys, those girls.

They look like they’re happy in their lives.

Why can’t I just be like one of them?

SHADOW PRIEST 1

No!  This weakness is not what your father intended.

SHADOW PRIEST 2

You will need to speak with Shinnok some more.

We brought you here so that you could understand

the world of Earth - not so that you could be a

part of it.

SHAO KAHN

Why can I not simply be a part of it?

Why can’t I run around like those boys?

SHADOW PRIEST 1

Because that’s not how things work.

Shao Kahn looks on.

SHAO KAHN

Am I really going to become their ruler?

SHADOW PRIEST 1

Only if you believe.  Only if you don’t give up.

And only if you don’t grow weak, and wish you

were like one of these small, pathetic mortals.

SHAO KAHN

(upset) I . . . I . . . understand.

He looks out into the world one more time.

The world he can never be a part of.

INT. SHAO KAHN’S DREAM

Shao Kahn, still a mortal, dressed in blue

rags, is talking to Shinnok’s giant head.

SHAO KAHN

But, Father . . . what about me?  If I’m

your son, why am I not all-powerful,

like you?

SHINNOK

This is a troubling part of the story.

Images play throughout the blackness

to illustrate Shinnok’s story.

SHINNOK

When the other Elder Gods banished me

to the NetherЯealm, they removed my

Essence from me, shrinking me to the

form I have now, where I am stuck.  My

Essence was contained inside an amulet,

and until I find that amulet, I cannot get

my Essence back.

SHAO KAHN

Until then, you’re . . . stuck being small?

SHINNOK

Correct.  I did the same to you, shortly

after you were born.  I arranged another

short visit to the Earth, and I collected

all your Essence from you, and kept it

inside a manmade object.

SHAO KAHN

Why?  Why would you do such a thing?

Reduce me to a mere mortal?

SHINNOK

You would not know what to do

with such power!  You would piss it

away, the same as any mortal man

would - on selfish mortal desires.

I kept all your Essence inside a

manmade object . . . a helmet.

SHAO KAHN

Where is this helmet?

SHINNOK

I can’t tell you, just yet.  Not until I know

you’re worthy of it.  Show me you are

worthy.  Return to Shimurai Island, with the

Shadow Priests, and go back to your training.

SHAO KAHN

Yes, Father.  I won’t fail you!  I swear it!

SHINNOK

Thank you.  Now wake up!

INT. CHINA - EARLY MORNING

Shao Kahn wakes up.

INT. SHIMURAI ISLAND - DAYTIME

Shao Kahn is teleported back to Shimurai

Island by the Shadow Priests.

SHADOW PRIEST 1

You’ve had your 3 years of life in China.

Now you go on with your training!

SHAO KAHN

I’ve already been trained in fighting.

SHADOW PRIEST 2

Now you will learn other skills.

LATER - teenage Shao Kahn practices

horseback riding.  Aggressively, he rides on.

LATER - Shao Kahn runs forth and

throws a spear at a dummy target.

The spear strikes the dummy’s neck.

LATER - teenage Shao Kahn uses a bow and arrow.

Practicing the sport of archery, he fires

the arrow, and it lands dead-on, bulls-eye.

SHAO KAHN

Excellent.

SHAO KAHN’S VOICE

I’m ready.

INT. SHIMURAI ISLAND - EVENING

Teenage Shao Kahn walks away from it all,

and is followed by two Shadow Priests.

SHAO KAHN

I’m ready to finally leave this island.

I’m ready to go out and conquer!

SHADOW PRIEST 1

Nonsense!  You are only 14 years old.

Still a boy!  You’re not ready.

SHAO KAHN

That’s what you say!  I say, if I go out now,

you would be amazed by what I would do.

SHADOW PRIEST 2

You know this is not the plan.  You’re not

powerful enough.

SHAO KAHN

Of course I am!  I’m a half-man, half-Elder God.

SHADOW PRIEST 1

You are only a mortal, for right now.

You have trained well.  But you have

not yet claimed your Essence.

Shao Kahn stops to think about that.

INT. SHAO KAHN’S DREAM - NIGHT

Shao Kahn again talks to Shinnok’s head.

SHAO KAHN

Again, I say, father, I am ready!!

Ready to claim back my Essence.

Please!  Just tell me where I can find

that helmet!

SHINNOK

You are 19 years old now, by human

measurements.  Very well.  You are ready.

I will tell you where that helmet is.  But

you must work hard to claim it back - and

you must do this work as a mortal.

SHAO KAHN

I understand.  I’m ready to do whatever it takes.

SHINNOK

Very well.  After you were born, I instructed

my wraiths, the Brothers of the Shadow, to

hide that helmet at the top of a temple built

over a mountain.  I will tell you where to find

that mountain.

EXT. HIDDEN TEMPLE - NIGHT

The temple stands at the top of a mountain.

We PULL BACK to see increasingly further

down the mountain.

Shao Kahn climbs up the mountain, quickly.

It’s a difficult task, but he’s highly skilled at it.

Rock crumbles beneath his feet.

Nonetheless, Shao Kahn continues to

climb up higher.

LATER - he reaches the top of the mountain,

finishing his exhausting climb.  At last, he comes

to a stop, holding his hands over his chest.

SHAO KAHN
I wish I had . . . water . . .

Shao Kahn continues to hold his own mortal body.

Then he looks on.  He has not only scaled the

mountain, but he has found the temple.

SHAO KAHN

I have made it!  Now to find that helmet.

He walks on.

But two mortal men, Chinese monks,

run out of the darkness and at Shao Kahn,

to stop him.

Shao Kahn is shocked, for a second.

SHAO KAHN

I suppose I should have expected this.

He brutally fights the first monk he sees,

then knocks down the second as well.

Both monks are now laying down on the ground.  But

they quickly rise back up, and run at Shao Kahn again.

CHINESE MONK 1

(We will not let you reach the artifact!)

CHINESE MONK 2

(We will never let it happen!  Now surrender!)

SHAO KAHN
(NEVER!  I NEVER SURRENDER!

You two will die for that suggestion!)

Shao Kahn continues to fight the monks,

quickly kicking one in the leg, then striking a

blow to the other’s chest with his right hand.

Now that both monks are down, Shao Kahn

walks on into the entrance to the hidden temple.

Shinnok’s head appears, in a transparent form,

over the temple’s wall.

SHINNOK

I am proud of you, my son!  You have

climbed the mountain and taken down

two guardians.

SHAO KAHN

Did you send those guardians yourself?

SHINNOK

No.  No.  These mortal men know that they

could never destroy the helmet, and there

would be no use in destroying the temple.  So

they instead try to stop you from reaching the

artifact.

SHAO KAHN

I see.  I will stop them all!

SHINNOK

You still have not completely finished your task.

Prove to me that you deserve your Essence!

SHAO KAHN

Yes, Father!

Shao Kahn runs on.

INT. HIDDEN TEMPLE - FRONT ENTRANCE

A long stretch of hallway greets Shao Kahn.

We quickly FLY ACROSS the hallway.

At the far end of it: the manmade helmet

rests on a white sculptured seat.

SHAO KAHN

The helmet!  There it is!

He stops himself.

SHAO KAHN

I bet the mortal men have

filled this place with traps.

He walks on, but then takes a quick

and prudent step back.  A second later,

a downward-aiming scythe, attached to

a chain attached to the ceiling, swings

past him and into the wall.

Shao Kahn runs forward, and the swinging

scythe misses him again.

Walking ahead, there will be 8 swinging

scythes to avoid, in order to reach the helmet.

Shao Kahn runs in coordinated timing.

He runs straight ahead when he knows

he would not be hit by the scythes.

After 8 scythes, he has reached the end.

A scene where Shao Kahn finds the helmet, puts it on, and reclaims his Essence.

His white Essence energy is flowing

through him again.

SHAO KAHN

I am the most powerful man on Earth!

I am not just a mortal man.  I am half

Elder God!  I am SHAO KAHN!

He laughs loudly.

He fires a green ball of energy.

He throws a spear made of green energy.

SHAO KAHN

I was born to conquer.  And now . . .

that is exactly what I will do.  China is mine.

Shao Kahn learned that Earth was only one of many worlds.

Using his new Essence, he created a portal to the Nexus of Realms.

Inside the Nexus of Realms, Shao Kahn walked around and finally got to see this place.

SHAO KAHN

Zaterra.

He took a short visit there.

SHAO KAHN

Cryo.

He took a short visit there.

SHAO KAHN

Very cold.  I would never travel here without my Essence.

SHAO KAHN
The Outworld.  The writings are true

. . . I must travel to this . . . Outworld.

He enters the portal.

(The tunnel between both ends of the portal

goes on for 7 seconds.)

Shao Kahn lands in Outworld.

INT. OUTWORLD WASTELANDS - NIGHT

In the miles of empty nothing, shrouded in fog,

that is Outworld, Shao Kahn walks slowly.

“Outworld”

A caption FADES IN for 5 seconds.

SHAO KAHN

So this is Outworld.  Very well.  This will

be the first realm I shall overtake.

Shinnok speaks to Shao Kahn.  Shinnok’s

enormous head can be seen against the

clouds of the sky.

SHINNOK

Outworld is a poisoned, unpopulated realm.

Very few beings live here.  There will be

few obstacles you would conquer.  But I

warn you that Outworld has the one mightiest

being you will face . . . the Dragon King.

SHAO KAHN

Who is this Dragon King?

SHINNOK

He is the ruler of Outworld, and commander of

his armies of dragons and mummies.

SHAO KAHN

Bah.  Dragons and mummies won’t be

enough to stop me!

SHINNOK

Fool!  Remember not to grow too arrogant.

It would be your downfall.

SHAO KAHN

. . . Yes, Father.

SHINNOK

The Dragon King is unstoppable in

the mortal plane.  Only with the power

of your Essence can you possibly try to

defeat Onaga.  But be warned that it will

not be an easy fight.

SHAO KAHN

How will I find him?

SHINNOK

He will find you.

Shinnok’s head in the clouds disappears from sight.

SHAO KAHN

“Try not to grow too arrogant, Shao Kahn.”

“It would be your downfall.”

Hmm.  Says the one who ended up banished.

I seem to be just fine, thank you.

Shao Kahn continues to walk through the

endless mists of Outworld.

An unmistakable winged shadow flies through

the air, letting out a loud roaring scream.

The Dragon King is here.

Shao Kahn flinches, at first.

SHAO KAHN

Don’t be afraid.

He continues to shiver and shake.

SHAO KAHN

Don’t be afraid . . .

KAHN’S THOUGHTS

Idiot!  That’s your mortal half feeling like that.

The weak half.  The Elder God half of you

knows no fear.  Remember that.

He grips his War Hammer.  Now his Elder God

half is beginning to win.

Onaga, the Dragon King, approaches Shao Kahn.

1.5 times the size of a normal human, with a body

of green dragon scales, the Dragon King is indeed

the largest enemy Shao Kahn has yet met.

Onaga grabs Shao Kahn and flies him high

up into the air.

Shao Kahn strikes Onaga with his War Hammer.

Onaga is struck a significant blow.

ONAGA

What . . .??  How did that hurt me?

Onaga flies at Shao Kahn again, to attack him.

Shao Kahn swings a series of punches at Onaga instead.

Soon enough, the two are falling toward the ground,

with Shao Kahn on top, and Onaga landing first.  The

Dragon King hits the ground.

Shao Kahn flies out of his grip, somewhat hurt, but not

as bad as his foe.

The Dragon King flies out of the ground, having just

formed a crater in it.

Flapping his wings quickly, he takes off in flight

after Shao Kahn.

The future Emperor throws his War Hammer

directly at the Dragon King.

Shao Kahn also quickly runs at his enemy.

The hammer strikes Onaga, and then Shao Kahn

quickly rams his enemy with his shoulder blade,

striking a second blow.

Onaga is thrown through the air.

NARRATION

Shao Kahn’s battles with the Dragon King raged on

for much time.  Eventually, Shao Kahn emerged

victorious.

The Dragon King lays on the ground, fallen.

NARRATION

In 10,000 years, nobody had stopped the Dragon King,

until Shao Kahn.  The Dragon King was still immortal,

but Shao Kahn kept him unconscious.  To make sure his

enemy would never come after him again, Shao Kahn

kept him stuck in his state of sleep . . .

INT. OUTWORLD MOUNTAINS

Lightning strikes from the sky to the ground

near the mountains.

At the top of a black mountain: Shao Kahn.

NARRATION

. . . as Shao Kahn went on to take over

the wastelands of Outworld.

SHAO KAHN

The Outworld is now mine!!  Thus

begins the Era of the Shao Kahn Dynasty!

NARRATION

Shao Kahn had claimed Outworld his own.

INT. OUTWORLD WASTELANDS - LATER

Walking on through the emptiness of Outworld,

he continues to make his way through the mist,

no longer interrupted.

NARRATION

But the satisfaction of his claim was short-lived.

For in time he wanted more than the empty

nothingness of Outworld.  He wanted Earth,

the Mother Realm, to be his own.  In time.

Shao Kahn looks up into the sky,

eying planet Earth.

It fades away.  He was only imagining it.

We look back down at Shao Kahn’s head.

He sighs.

Then he puts on his helmet.

INT. OUTWORLD - EMPTY WASTELANDS - SOON

Shao Kahn speaks the spells, and uses his

hands to manipulate yellow energy, to open

a pink portal, a gateway to another place.

Once he lets go of his grip on it with his hands,

the portal continues to grow, and it stutters,

and starts to die down, but then grows to full size.

Shao Kahn takes a step back, and basks in the

greatness of the portal he created.

After he is done admiring it, he takes a step inside.

INT. VORTEX

We are SUCKED QUICKLY THROUGH THE VORTEX.

We fly at mind-bending speeds between the two

points of the portal.

We land on the destination end.

INT. NEXUS - GROUND

Shao Kahn lands in the Nexus of Realms.

NARRATION

The Nexus of Realms was built by the Elder

Gods to be a house of passageways between

all realms.  Shao Kahn was free to explore.

But the Elder Gods saw and knew everything

that happened in the Nexus.

Shao Kahn steps close to the portal

labeled NETHERЯEALM.

Shao Kahn looks at it closely.

In the portal, he can see a reflection of

the other end.  An inferno.  People walking

around as slaves, accompanied by demons.

An enormous lake of lava.  A pole full of

human skulls.

NARRATION

The NetherЯealm was where Shinnok

was being kept.

Shao Kahn steps forth, into the portal to

the NetherЯealm.

INT. NETHERЯEALM - SOON

A portal opens, and Shao Kahn emerges from it,

walking ahead, shortly before it closes.

NARRATION

Shao Kahn knew that the only way to enter the

NetherRealm was to be bad enough.  The truly

noble would not exist here.

An enormous blue oni demon runs forth,

and damned human bodies run away from it.

The oni swats its iron club toward the humans,

striking one and sending him through the air,

to land on the ground elsewhere.

Shao Kahn looks up to the NetherЯealm’s sky.

Up above, the goat-like face of Baphomet

can be seen against the sky, grinning.

INT. NETHERЯEALM VALLEYS - SOON

Shao Kahn walks through the NetherЯealm,

past walking skeletons, cadavers, and chained

human prisoners.

NARRATION

Shao Kahn would not stop until he had

met his father, Shinnok.

SHINNOK

Hello, son.

SHAO KAHN

I’ve . . . I’ve traveled long and far to find you.

SHINNOK

You’ve done well.

SHAO KAHN

I thought you would be much taller than this.

SHINNOK

Yes, those miserable Elder Gods stripped me

of my title, and removed my Essence from me.

SHAO KAHN

Where is your Essence?

SHINNOK

It’s been contained in an amulet in Earth realm.

I need you to get my amulet to me.

SHAO KAHN

I see.  I will do this for you.

SHINNOK

This is merely a visit.  You do not want to end up

killed by one of these oni.  Then you will truly be

stuck here.  Stay alive throughout your missions!

SHAO KAHN

Yes, Father.  I will not fail you!

Shao Kahn runs away, and leaps into a

pink portal out of the NetherЯealm.

INT. NEXUS - SOON

Shao Kahn’s body is tossed out of the

orange NetherЯealm portal, and he lands

on the floor, finally laying on his side.

Standing to his feet, he brushes his

arms off, and looks around himself.

NARRATION

Now he had seen the realm of the dead

for himself.  What other realms could he

visit . . . and conquer?

Many portals exist in this place.

It is an awesome sight for young Kahn.

NARRATION

Shao Kahn, who had defeated the Dragon King,

and taken over Outworld, he was simply supposed

to find his father’s amulet for him.  But instead of

doing this, he remained in his own path, of conquest.

In time he decided that he would never release his

father from the NetherЯealm.  He would just keep

everything for himself instead.  He was the ruler of

Outworld.  But next, he set his sights on: Edenia.

FADE TO: WHITE.

NARRATION
Edenia was said to be the most perfect realm

of the living.  Some said its people descended

directly from the Gods.

FADE TO:

INT. EDENIA - GREEN FIELDS - SUNRISE

We FLY THROUGH the yellow and green fields

of Edenia, underneath the crystal-blue, lavender,

and pink sky.

NARRATION

Long, long ago, in a land far, far away,

Edenia was the perfect realm to live in.

EXT. KING JERROD’S CASTLE - MORNING

NARRATION

The rulers of Edenia were King Jerrod and

Queen Sindel.

King Jerrod, wearing a blue robe, bows

his head, as he stands in the outdoor field.

Queen Sindel, sporting long black hair with a

white stripe in the middle, stands next to him,

wearing purple.

Standing next to them is Princess Kitana,

wearing all blue.

NARRATION

Their beautiful daughter was Princess Kitana.

The three are addressing a crowd of dozens

of humans, who have shown up for the Picnic.

Several bears are also here.  Some are

brown, but others are blue or purple.

KING JERROD

My fellow Edenians . . . my fellow

human beings . . . and bears . . .

Some of the people laugh.

KING JERROD

It is with great honor and prestige that I,

King Jerrod, light the candle of the 17th

Annual Picnic Festival.

King Jerrod takes a moment to light

the candle, officially beginning the ceremony.

KING JERROD

For all the creatures of this world were put

here by the same dieties - the Elder Gods -

and we must all co-exist in peace.

PRINCESS KITANA

Yes.  Edenia is known as a world where Man

can co-exist with Animal.  Where Fairies and

Pixies and Sprites can work their healing wonders

on the ill and sick.  Let the Picnic Festival be a

reminder that all kinds of things can co-exist in

harmony.  Now . . . let the Picnic Festival begin!

The people and bears begin to walk,

to get their baskets of food.

Indeed, small fairies, pixies, and sprites are

flying through the area as well, mostly at the

height level of the people’s foreheads.  Their

wands light up the areas like small lightning bugs.

Shao Kahn shows up with dark plans.

Shao Kahn convinces Rain to betray King Jerrod.

Rain summons the lightning that kills the King.

King Jerrod’s soul talks to Kitana,

telling her what really happened.

Queen Sindel tries to kill herself, instead of

serving Shao Kahn.  He uses brainwashing drinks

to lure her to his side.

Rain leads the marriage ceremony between

Shao Kahn and Queen Sindel.

Shao Kahn crowns himself the Emperor,

and Sindel his Empress.

Once Sindel awakens from her trance,

she asks where Kitana is, and is told

Kitana is dead.  Sindel throws herself off

the Rocky Mountains.

Kitana is actually alive.  But now

Sindel is dead.  Shao Kahn owns

Outworld, and wants to make Kitana

his princess daughter.  So she escapes,

to Earth realm.

Princess Kitana has fled to Earth.

But Edenia is now in the hands

of Shao Kahn.

The Emperor begins the process

of the fusion of two realms.

Argus shows up.

SHAO KAHN

Who are you?

ARGUS

My name is Argus.  I am a protector God

of Edenia.

SHAO KAHN

I see.  I am Shao Kahn.  I will be

the new Emperor of Edenia.

ARGUS

I will not let that be.  I am one of the Gods.

You are merely a mortal.

SHAO KAHN

Between my two parents, one was a mortal,

and the other an Elder God - Shinnok.

ARGUS

Shinnok - the one who was banished by

the other Elders?

SHAO KAHN

Yes.  That one.

ARGUS

I see.  And you are his half-mortal son . . .

here, to do the same as your father once did?

SHAO KAHN

No.  I am not here to bring destruction

upon the animals.  Rather, I seek to rule

manmade civilizations.  Forever.  My

ambition is greater than any Emperor who

has ever lived in the history of my Earth realm.

The Elder Gods show up to tell Shao Kahn that his way is unfair.

SHAO KAHN

Raiden has his Earth.  Argus has his Edenia.

And I have my Outworld.

ELDER GOD 1

Yes - but now you are stepping beyond

your entitlements.

ELDER GOD 2

You cannot win every realm through killing mortals!

ELDER GOD 3

This dispute must be settled by a system of trials.

ELDER GOD 4

A tournament will be crafted.

Shao Kahn and Argus circle each other.

ARGUS
I am still the protector God of Edenia.

I am its sworn protector.  And I will not

let you have my realm!

SHAO KAHN

It isn’t YOUR realm.  In time, it will be mine.

It will be part of Outworld.

ARGUS

I will invite mortal men and women to this tournament.

To represent Edenia - to fight against your Outworld.

SHAO KAHN

That is fine.  I will invite mortal men and women to

fight in the name of Outworld, and its greater glory.

They will fight to overtake Edenia.

ARGUS

Edenia will never become absorbed by your Outworld.

SHAO KAHN

Unless Outworld wins the majority of the tournaments.

ARGUS

You are a madman.  You won’t have your way!

SHAO KAHN

That remains yet to be seen.

Shao Kahn walks away.

INT. EARTH REALM - FUTURE

A pyramid rises out of the ground.

SOON - dozens of people run up the fully-risen

pyramid.  A woman in purple, Li Mei, runs up the

stairs, only to be knocked backward by Nightwolf.

Up, at the top of the pyramid, the enormous

orange elemental Blaze stands guard.

From a far distance, we see dozens of men and

women continue to run up the pyramid at once.

INT. ARGUS’ CASTLE - EARLY MORNING

Female mortal Delia opens her eyes, finally

done with sleeping and dreaming.  Her dreams

and visions become after-images that fade

away as she stands up for the day.

ARGUS

Trouble, dear?

DELIA

Troubling dreams.

ARGUS

Again?

Delia walks away.

INT. ARGUS’ CASTLE - BALCONY

Argus and Delia hold each other.

ARGUS

A week ago I thought Edenia was at its best.

Now we stand poised for war.  Not war.  Defense

against this . . . Shao Kahn, this invading Emperor.

DELIA

Oh, Argus.  I’m concerned about this Mortal

Kombat tournament that the Elder Gods are crafting.

ARGUS
Don’t be.  I can’t die in the tournament.  I’m a God.

I would be using an avatar body of flesh and blood -

so, even if I do lose, I just go back to my regular

form, immortal.  I can’t die from the tournament.

DELIA

I understand that.  You’ve explained that

part to me before.  I’m not worried that you

would die out there.

ARGUS

Then what is it?

DELIA

This tournament that’s coming up . . . it . . .

it’s supposed to be Edenia’s defense against

Outworld.  Yet it brings on one troubling factor.

It promotes use - and overuse - of kombat energy.

ARGUS

How do you know this?

DELIA

I’ve been seeing it in my dreams.

Remember yesterday’s dream,

about the pyramid rising?

ARGUS

Yes.

DELIA

Today’s dream continued from there.  The

pyramid finishes rising, and Armaggeddon

commences.  Blaze is awake.  Everybody at

the pyramid is fighting with kombat energy.

ARGUS

I’m afraid I don’t see the significance of these . . . dreams.

DELIA

Did you forget that I am a seer?  That, whenever

I have a troubling dream, it comes true, in time?

ARGUS

. . . True.

DELIA

You see, this Mortal Kombat tournament . . . mortal

men and women will be there, in the company of a

God.  Everyone will be exchanging kombat energy

when they fight.  Once, or twice, with two people, is

no big deal.  But a hundred tournaments, and a thou-

sand fighters - all that exchange of kombat energy, that

overuse, would seriously weaken the fabric of the realms.

ARGUS

What would be the consequence of that?

DELIA

Stretched thin enough, the realms would fall apart,

and cause Armaggeddon.  The Pyramid rises at the

very end of the world.

ARGUS

When does all this happen?

DELIA

Not for over two thousand years.

It takes a lot of time, and people,

and use of kombat energy . . . but

remember, too much of it is bad.

ARGUS

Over the long term, you say.  Well.  There are

many more pressing concerns at hand today -

namely the future of Edenia.  I will worry about the

long-term effects of kombat energy some time later,

but in the meantime, yes, I will proceed with teaching

the ways of kombat energy to the mortals.

DELIA

Oh, Argus.  Don’t you understand?

Too much use of that energy is bad!

ARGUS

I promise: once Shao Kahn leaves, I will

stop teaching it to the people.

DELIA

Very well.  Thank you, my love.

ARGUS

Anything for you.

The two kiss.

NARRATION

And so the first Mortal Kombat tournament commenced.

FADE TO: BLACK.

INT. EDENIA - SKY

The 6 Elder Gods, enormous and blue,

surround the God Argus.

ELDER GOD 1

The Mortal Kombat tournament will be held

10 times in Edenia.  Whichever side wins by

majority - Edenia or Outworld - wins the rights

to Edenia for all time.

ELDER GOD 2

If Outworld does win, then you, Argus,

will lose your position as the protector

and gaurdian of Edenia, as that role

will go to Shao Kahn.

ARGUS

I understand.

ELDER GOD 3

In case of a stalemate, where both sides

have won 5 tournaments, we will look to

the winner of the 10th and final tournament

to make our decision.

ELDER GOD 4

These are the rules of the tournament.

Do you understand them?

ARGUS

Yes.

ELDER GOD 4

Will you participate in this tournament, voluntarily?

ARGUS

Yes.  I also wish to fight in the tournament

myself, in an avatar body.

ELDER GOD 4

Very well.  You may do so.  If you are killed,

you are disqualified from that tournament, and

may no longer fight in that one, but you are

allowed to return for the next one.

ARGUS

Yes.

ELDER GOD 5

The 10 Mortal Kombat tournaments will

take place in Edenia.  They will be held

20 Edenia-years apart.  Are you ready?

ARGUS
Yes, I am.

ELDER GOD 6

The first tournament will commence in

30 Edenia-days.  Prepare the mortals.

INT. EDENIA - BLUE FIELDS - SOON

Argus stands with a crew of mortal men,

who stand ready to fight.

ARGUS

Men.  You are only mortal.  You are not

a God, like me.  However, now I will guide

you through the tournament, Mortal Kombat,

the tournament crafted by the Elder Gods.

Shao Kahn, the Emperor of the realm Outworld,

wants to claim Edenia his own.  He wants to

merge Edenia with Outworld, and rule as the

Emperor of the combined world.  I say: we must

stop him.  And the only way to fight the Outworld

battlers is with kombat energy: the energy of a God.

The mortal men begin to murmur

in confusion with each other.

ARGUS

Allow me to demonstrate the power of a God.

Argus quickly leaps forward through the air,

grabs a person, and throws him away,

through the air.

Argus quickly runs across the area, then

delivers a swift uppercut to the same opponent,

before he lands on the ground, knocking him

back up into the air.

Argus then somersaults up into the air, and

catches his opponent, before landing on

the ground again.

ARGUS

Indeed, I am more powerful than a regular mortal.

But you can ALL learn to tap into a very small

drop of my Essence, my power, to learn the ways

of kombat energy.  But remember: outside the

Mortal Kombat tournament, never use the ways of

kombat energy again.  Too much of it would weaken

the fabric of the realms.

KNIGHT

I can never learn to leap the way you just did.

ARGUS

Not yet.  Not as an ordinary mortal.  But you

will get there.  Remember this.  The energy is

all around you.  The energy is all throughout

the air.  You just can’t see it.  All you have to do

is learn to tap into it.

KNIGHT

That still is not something I can learn.

ARGUS

It’s like learning a language.  It may

be difficult, but it’s possible.  Here.

Argus leaps into the air again, somersaulting

and landing on the opposite side of the knight.

KNIGHT

I’m still not a God.

ARGUS

No - but learn from one!  Learn to

manipulate kombat energy.  We will

need to use this, in order to stop Shao
Kahn and his minions.  For, if we don’t,

they will be using the kombat energy

against us, and we will be defenseless

against it.

The knight tries to jump.

He gets one foot up in the air.

ARGUS

It will not be learned in one day.

Argus himself fights Shao Kahn at the end

of the tournament, and loses.

NARRATION

Shao Kahn won 10 straight victories in

the Mortal Kombat tournaments.  All 10

out of 10 tournaments were won by Outworld.

NARRATION

Shao Kahn used his newfound power to

merge two worlds together: Outworld,

and Edenia.

INT. EDENIA - SOON

The beautiful landscape of Edenia now looks

dark and poisoned, mixed with Outworld.

The beautiful landscape of Edenia is darkening.

NARRATION

It took 6 days to merge Edenia together with

Outworld.  When it was done, the two realms

were one and the same.

The Blue Fields become the purple Outworld Wastelands.

NARRATION

Now that Shao Kahn had beaten the Dragon King,

he felt himself capable of beating everyone and

everything.  Now he had taken over Edenia, the

most perfect realm.  What had been the most perfect

had now become the darkest and most desolate.

Shinnok’s face appears against the clouds,

in the purple sky.

SHINNOK

You have done well, my son!  You have taken over

not only the empty realm of Outworld, but Edenia

as well!  You have not merely dodged the Elder

Gods, but won at their own game!  You have done

marvelously.

SHAO KAHN

Thank you, Father.

SHINNOK

Now you must fulfill your destiny . . . by

finding my amulet, and releasing me from my

confines.

SHAO KAHN

Should I?  Should I release you, to rule

all things?  . . . Or should I instead be of

the belief that the son may surpass the father?

The creation may surpass the creator.

SHINNOK

Don’t be foolish, boy.  You were meant to

release me from my confinement.

SHAO KAHN

Before I do that . . . I think I would like to see

how many other realms I could conquer.

SHINNOK

You stupid idiot!  Then for certain the Elder

Gods will banish you to where I am!

SHAO KAHN

Not true - I will challenge realms to my

tournament, and only invade if I win.

SHINNOK

What??

SHAO KAHN

They were Edenia’s defense against Outworld.

The Mortal Kombat tournaments.  Thus, I could

challenge any realm I choose to those tournaments.

If they accept, then I could win the tournaments to

win the realms, and no longer can the rest of the

Elder Gods object.

SHINNOK

It would never work!  Nobody would accept your challenge!

Shao Kahn walks away.

SHAO KAHN

I will show you, Father.  Watch my plan in action.

SHINNOK

No!

Shao Kahn uses his power to open up a pink portal.

Once it’s grown to full size, he walks right into it.

INT. NEXUS OF REALMS

Shao Kahn exits the NetherЯealm portal in the Nexus.

Shao Kahn challenges Zaterra.

SHAO KAHN

If Zaterra wins the tournament, I will

leave, in peace, and never return.

But if Outworld wins the tournament,

it will claim Zaterra its property.

They agree to the tournament.

NARRATION

Shao Kahn won 10 straight victories in

the Mortal Kombat tournaments in Zaterra.

Thus he came to own the realm.  In 6 days,

he merged Zaterra with Outworld.

INT. SPACE - LOOKING AT CRYO

NARRATOR

Cryo, the Ice Realm, was the third realm

sought by Shao Kahn.

INT. CRYO - GROUND-LEVEL

Under the night time sky, Shao Kahn

and his Shadow Priests walk on,

eyeing the enormous Cryomancer army.

The Cryomancer men, dressed in identical

armor, stand tall, strong, proud.

The Cryo flag blows in the wind.  A white

circle against a blue backdrop.  White snow

both on the ground inside the circle, and at

the ceiling outside the circle.

Shao Kahn approaches Princess Kaylani, who

sits on her throne.  Kaylani's costume: a crystal-

blue veil over her face.  Crystal blue eyes not

concealed.  Slightly long black hair.  A long-sleeved

black cloat with crystal-blue outlines ending before the

stomach, and a black bikini bottom.

SHAO KAHN

Princess Kaylani, of Cryo, the Ice Realm.

Kaylani removes the blue veil from her face.

KAYLANI

You wish to speak to me?

SHAO KAHN

I have long been the Emperor of Outworld.

I also am the owner of Edenia and Zaterra.

Now I wish to make Cryo into the third

province of Outworld.

KAYLANI

Yes, I've heard of your . . . activities in the

other realms.  I understand you wish to bring

10 Mortal Kombat tournaments to Cryo.

SHAO KAHN

Yes.  But I was wondering if I would bypass

the process entirely by getting your willing

permission.

KAYLANI

My willing permission, to hand the throne

of Cryo over to you, and your Armies?

SHAO KAHN

I could not have phrased it more

beautifully myself.

KAYLANI

It will never happen!

SHAO KAHN

So, you will oppose me, then.

KAYLANI

I will oppose you as long as you

think you want my world.

SHAO KAHN

Very well, then.  I was hoping we could

settle this the easy way.  But I see you're

going to insist on the difficult way.  Very

well.  Kaylani: my tournament will

be held in Cryo.

KAYLANI

Khione, Goddess of Ice, will be inviting

mortal men and women to fight for Cryo

at the tournament.

SHAO KAHN

My side - Outworld - will win.

KAYLANI

We will see.

INT. CRYO - TOURNAMENT SITE - LATER

Kaylani stands ready for battle.

She bows her head before her

opponent, a Tarkatan fighter.

The mutant creature gets its two

blades ready for killing.

SHAO KAHN

Round One.  Fight!

The Tarkatan fighter gets his blades ready.

He swings them both wildly.  These blades

are unstoppable.

Kaylani stays still for a moment, then runs

forward and swings a series of punches at

her opponent's head, avoiding the blades

after they've been swung.

In seconds, she has him knocked to the

ground.  She looks down over her fallen foe.

NARRATION

Kaylani fought hard against Shao Kahn's invasion.

But though she won her battles, the realm of Cryo

was still lost to Kahn.

INT. CRYO - TOURNAMENT SITE 2

A man dressed in Cryomancer attire is

impaled through the chest by a Tarkatan's blade.

NARRATION

Too many of Cryo's men were killed

by Outworld's Armies . . .

INT. CRYO - TOURNAMENT SITE 3

Another Cryomancer man is

up against a Zaterran reptilian.

The reptilian spits acid on the Cryomancer.

NARRATION

. . . and Cryo lost the tournament to Outworld.

INT. OUTWORLD - CRYO PROVINCE

Shao Kahn's Castle is visible from miles away.

Kaylani looks out into the Outworld landscape.

Refusing to live in his castle, she instead remains

outside in Cryo.

Kaylani is alone out here, in the snow.

She looks up, overhead, to see the purple lightning

that strikes from an unusual bunch of clouds.

NARRATION

The realm of Cryo was lost.  Its civilizations were lost.

The Cryomancers were forced to serve Kahn

as their new Emperor.  But a few of the Cryo-

mancers escaped to Earth realm, so that their

glory could live on.

INT. EARTH - CHINA - NATURAL HILLSIDE - EVENING

On a rainy evening, many Cryomancer

men walk through the nature.

NARRATOR

The Cryomancers who came to Earth landed

in China, and eventually mixed with the population

of its people.

CUT TO a closer angle.  Some of the men

remove their helmets, revealing their crystal-

blue eyes.

NARRATOR

Thus the Lin Kuei clan was formed on Earth.

INT. CHINESE NATURE - NIGHT

In the snow, a Cryomancer uses a stick

to carve a symbol.

The Lin Kuei logo.

NARRATOR

Though they had changed their name from the

Cryomancers to the Lin Kuei, these Chinese men

would stay true to the ways of old, and keep the

secrets of their heritage.  Among those secrets

was how its people could live comfortably in

extremely cold environments.

One Chinese man turns his head to look at us,

revealing the rare eye color of crystal-blue.

His Chinese wife hands him their baby.

The baby has brown eyes.

The blue-eyed father smiles.

INT. CHINESE MOUNTAINSIDE

Snow falls to the ground in the desolate

icy hills, where nobody lives except the

Lin Kuei.

The Lin Kuei students wear all black garments,

and are led by their Grandmaster to train in the

ways of kung fu.

GRANDMASTER

Yut!  Ye!  Sum!

STUDENTS

Yut!  Ye!  Sum!

GRANDMASTER

Yut!  Ye!  Sum!

STUDENTS

Yut!  Ye!  Sum!

NARRATOR

The Lin Kuei clan trained its men in the ways

of self-defense.  One day, these martial arts

skills might be used to defend Earth from

threats like Shao Kahn.

Kaylani demonstrates martial arts to a small

group of female students.

She kicks apart a wooden dummy.

It breaks apart into pieces.

INT. OUTWORLD - SHAO KAHN'S CASTLE

In Shao Kahn’s enormous castle, the Masked

Guards, with their black Anubis-like masks,

stand in a row, beside a row of Tarkatan

mutants, a row of reptilian Saurians, and a

new row of armor-clad Cryomancers, from Cryo.

All four kinds of servants are kneeling down

before Shao Kahn.

NARRATION

Most of the Cryomancers served Shao Kahn now.

They were allowed to live in his castle in exchange

for their loyalty to him.  The rest broke off into the

Lin Kuei.

One Cryomancer kneels down on the ground,

and looks up at Kahn.

The Emperor is pleased.

NARRATION

Although three realms had been taken by

Outworld, Shao Kahn still looked for more.

So again he traveled to the Nexus of Realms.

INT. NEXUS OF REALMS - SOON

Shao Kahn walks through the Nexus of Realms,

and steps into an orange portal.

NARRATION

In the Nexus of Realms, he found Kuatan:

realm of men, dragons . . . and Shokan hybrids.

Shao Kahn disappears entirely into the orange portal.

INT. KUATAN - OUTDOOR COBALT MINES - NIGHT

In the outdoor Cobalt mines of the realm of

Kuatan, a pink portal opens up from what looks

like nothing, and Shao Kahn steps forth.

In seconds, when Shao Kahn has stepped down,

the pink portal disappears back to nothing.

Shao Kahn looks at the bumpy, hilly landscape

of Kuatan.  In the far distance: green dragons

flap their wings and fly.  One belches fire.

Men slave away in the outdoor mines,

doing brutal labor.

Shokan hybrids, most of them orange in color,

some dark orange or brown, stand tall, strong,

pointing and giving orders at the lower humans.

SHOKAN

Go!  Walk again!

HUMAN

But - but walk where?

The Shokan grabs the human's bucket of water.

He empties the water out.

SHOKAN

Go!  Get more water!

You heard me!  Go!  Go now!

NARRATION

Kuatan was the fourth realm that

Shao Kahn sought for his Outworld.

INT. KUATAN - TOURNAMENT SITE 1

A four-armed Shokan does battle

with a Tarkatan.  The Shokan loses.

NARRATION

Outworld won the majority of its battles

with Kuatan.  So Kuatan became the

fourth province of Outworld.

FADE TO: BLACK.

INT. SPACE - LOOKING AT KANTARIAN

NARRATION

The realm of Kantarian was owned by the

Centaurs - half-men and half-horse.

INT. KANTARIAN - GROUND-LEVEL

Centaur hybrids walk under the yellow sky.

NARRATION

Kantarian had a story of its own for how the entire

realm came to be owned by the Centaurs.  Five continents

of humans were engaged in a global war with each other.

INT. BREEDING LABS - MIDDAY

Scientist men and women nod their heads to

each other while observing a female horse

kept in contained quarters.

NARRATION

The Centaurs were living weapons, sent off to war to

fight.  But the Centaurs came to declare their own

war against humankind, to dominate the planet.

INT. GRASSY FIELDS - MIDDAY

Blood splatters out of a human being

as two Centaurs assault him.

NARRATION

When the Centaurs turned against the humans,

their attack was brutal.  The Centaurs won the war.

They eliminated all human life from the realm,

and took their population into their own hands.

INT. HUMAN VILLAGES - SOON

A Centaur takes a flaming torch, and touches it

to a human-made structure, starting a fire that

extends to an entire manmade shop.

NARRATION

The Centaurs took over the world of Belthorne,

and changed its name to Kantarian.  Centuries

later, they would end up challenged by Shao Kahn

to Mortal Kombat . . . and lose to Outworld.

So Kantarian, the Centaur Realm, became the

fifth province of Outworld.

FADE TO: BLACK.

INT. SPACE - LOOKING AT VAETERNUS

NARRATION

The realm of Vaeternus was inhabited by

the vampire-people.  But Vaeternus lost 10

Mortal Kombat tournaments to Outworld.

INT. OUTWORLD - DAYTIME

A male vampire screams as the Sunlight

burns his body.

He runs and runs to find shade in

a natural cave.

NARRATION

After the six days of merging were complete,

Vaeternus was nothing more than the sixth

province of Outworld.  The vampire people

could not take the Sunlight of the star that

Outworld orbited around.  But they had no

other choice, but to live in Outworld,

showing themselves only at night.

FADE TO: BLACK.

INT. SPACE - LOOKING AT OCHANEP

The planet Ochanep looks red, blue,

and purple from space.

NARRATION

Next, Shao Kahn found the alien realm of

Ochanep.  He challenged its people to 10

Mortal Kombat tournaments, and Outworld won.

INT. OCHANEP - CAPITOL CITY

Flying vehicles take off at extremely fast speeds

through the air, firing away with green laser bullets.

NARRATION

Ochanep, a realm known for its history of conquering

other places, itself became taken by Outworld.

The futuristic landscape of Ochanep begins to

become overwhelmed by Outworld.  The same

way that Edenia’s perfect structures became

half-gone, that same fate now befalls Ochanep.

NARRATION

Shao Kahn merged the alien realm of Ochanep

with Outworld, to become its seventh province.

FADE TO: BLACK.

INT. SPACE - LOOKING AT ZAA

NARRATION

Zaa was the Rainforest Realm.  It

was the eighth realm claimed by

Outworld and taken by Shao Kahn.

FADE TO: BLACK.

INT. SPACE - LOOKING AT AR'QUN

NARRATION

Ar'qun was the desert realm of men and genies.  It

was the ninth realm taken by Outworld and Shao Kahn.

FADE TO: BLACK.

INT. SPACE - LOOKING AT THE MOON

NARRATION

With 9 realms in his possession, Shao Kahn

set his sights on one last world left to take.

We LOOK AWAY, to the blue

and green globe of Earth.

NARRATION

Earth.  The Mother Realm.

INT. OUTWORLD WASTELANDS - EVENING

In the dark purple wastelands, Shao Kahn

looks up at the blue moon, and Shang Tsung

stands beside him.

SHANG TSUNG

Edenia.  Zaterra.  Cryo.  Kuatan.

Kantarian.  Vaeternus.  Ochanep.  Zaa.

Ar’qun.  They are all one now.  Outworld.

SHAO KAHN

Yes . . . and soon enough, I will have

Earth.  I will be Earth’s Emperor.

SHANG TSUNG

But master . . . why do you want Earth?

Earth is the least spectacular of the realms.

Why not . . . ChaosRealm?  Or Seido,

the Order Realm?

SHAO KAHN

Earth is the realm from which all the others grew.

When I own Earth, and merge it with Outworld,

I will have broken the capitol of the realms.

The rest will be quick and easy to take.

SHANG TSUNG

I see.  Then Earth will merely be

a part of Outworld.  Spectacular!

SHAO KAHN

Yes . . . and you will rule by my side as my general.

Shang Tsung laughs.

SHANG TSUNG

When do the Earth tournaments begin?

SHAO KAHN

Soon.  Be patient.  It will begin soon.

Shao Kahn, sitting on his throne, looks out

across Outworld, with Shang Tsung standing

by his side.

Ermac and Rain approach Shao Kahn from behind.

ERMAC

What shall we do, master?

SHAO KAHN

All you need to do for me is to fight in the

Earth tournaments, fighting for Outworld.

Can you do that?

ERMAC

Gladly!

RAIN

Will I get to fight for Outworld as well?

SHAO KAHN

Yes, Rain: you may crush the Earth warriors as well.

Kitana.  Mileena.  I know you two will fight bravely as well.

Four-armed Goro begins to stretch his lower set

of arms.  Then, he stretches his upper arms as well.

SHAO KAHN

Goro, Prince of the Shokan species of Kuatan.

Reigning champion of 300 years.  Nobody has

beaten you in 3 centuries.  I know you will crush

any Earthlings that try to stop Outworld.

Shao Kahn walks to Shang Tsung.

SHAO KAHN

Shang Tsung, as always with my tournaments, I need a

human from the realm I'm challenging to serve as its host.

I nominate you to host the 10 Earth tournaments.

We will challenge Earth to Mortal Kombat,

and our side, Outworld, will win.

Shao Kahn looks out into the dark Outworld Sunset.

Sitting on his throne, he is accompanied by

Kitana, Mileena, Ermac, Rain, Goro, and Shang Tsung.

SHAO KAHN

Earth will soon enough . . . be OURS!

His eyes glow red.
